Medical Definition

From a medical standpoint, vertigo is a balance disorder, usually caused by an issue in the inner ear, part of the vestibular system. The vestibular system is responsible for a person’s spatial orientation, and therefore balance, focus, posture and even movement are at risk when an issue occurs. This could be the result of a bacterial infection or issue with the circulatory system. Head injuries can also cause someone to need the help of a chiropractor for vertigo.

Symptoms

Vertigo is most commonly associated with extreme dizziness and disorientation. A person suffering from this condition may experience the sensation that they are constantly turning while not moving, or that objects are turning or orbiting around them. This can lead to blurred vision, disorientation, nausea or vomiting, blood pressure issues, headaches, migraines, or fainting.

Treatment

Just like the causes and symptoms, treatments for vertigo can vary. You may be able to see a chiropractor for vertigo who will recommend and assist with head and neck exercises. In elevated cases, a medical professional may diagnose and treat vertigo with medications that fight motion sickness and anxiety. They may also prescribe vestibular rehabilitation. If the condition is persistent and chronic, treatment and care may include home modifications like hand or guard rails to help with balance. The cause and duration of the condition often informs the treatment. If it does seem to be the result of a bacterial issue, a doctor may prescribe an antibiotic which may prove effective.

Regardless of the cause, if you are experiencing symptoms of vertigo, you should seek medical help to regain or improve your quality of life.
